PEOPLE WONT VOTE!

Right now there is an epidemic on college campuses and Central Michigan’s in particular and its that people wont vote.

As most people who currently reside in Michigan and are legally allowed to vote know the Michigan presidential primaries is happening on the 10th of March. The presidential primaries is where people cast their vote on who they belive should be the presidential candidate for either the Democratic side or the Republican side.

As said in my last post I said that college students are one of the biggest groups of people that politics effect whether that be on campus, federal loans or even political opinions brought forth by Professors on campus. It is imperrative that Everyone votes not just college students in these elections Everyone’s vote matters and people should want to say that they did everything they could to get your cadidate through to the presidential elections.

Back to this epidemic I mentioned earlier. During my Journalism class last week we were given the task of going around campus and asking people at random a series of question in regards to voting in general. The questions we asked consisted of:

Are you registered to vote in the state of Michigan?

Are you registered with a specific political party? (we ask this because it isnt manditory for you to declare your party in the state of Michigan)

Are you planning on voting in the Presidential primaries?

Do you know who you will vote for? and if so why?

Are there any concerns you have in regards to the upcoming election?

Unfortunitally I wasnt able to ask as many people as I wanted but I gained some valuable inside and some shocking data about voting on CMU campus. Our servey consisted of around 10 people that we had stopped to ask on the way to the Bovee center. The data consisted of everyone saying that they were registered and the majority said they were registered as a Democrat while others saying they weren’t . The most shocking part of this survey is that 8/10 people we asked if they were planning on voting on March 10th for the presidential primaries had said “No probably not”.

The question that came to mind when they said this was “if you are registered why would you not want to vote”. I could’ve asked this but to save time and preserve the integrity of the survey I refrained. After the 2016 election when Donald J. Trump was elected people were in uprore and when some people were asked who they voted for they replied with “I didnt vote”. YOu cant make change if you don’t vote. We live in a democratic society where you can vote to make change so why don’t you.

Everyone needs to vote. Everyone needs to do research into each candidate in order to make an educated decision on who you want to vote on. It is as simple as that.

This “I probably wont vote” epidemic needs to stop not just on CMU campus but everywhere.

VOTE VOTE VOTE!
