CMU Republicans Club

Most people might think that because you are apart of a certain political party that you follow everything that they stand for without question. I can tell you for a fact that is not the case. Personally I am a republican and I agree with a lot of their values and opinions but I dont agree with everything. For the things that I don’t completely agree with I tend to agree with a different party depending on the topic.

One of the prime examples of this happening was during the first meetings of the CMU college republicans. A club that meets every Wednesday at 20:00 o’clock (8:00 PM) in Anspach 169.

During the meeting we played a game where the president of the club presented us with topics/issues and we were to go to a side of the room whether we agreed or disagreed and in the middle if you were indifferent about the issue. As we went through the topics I was shocked to find out that even thought the majority of us identified as republicans we didnt always agree

One of the topics that we had to vote on whether we agreed or disagreed was in regards to the wall that was proposed by our current president Donald Trump. Should we build a wall on the southern boarder? The majority of the boarder was in agreeance that we should but there were a couple of students that said that they didn’t. Their reasoning was that we build a wall they would find a different way to cross the boarder and if that happens then the wall was practically a waste of money and time. When I heard this I changed my mind from being for the wall to being indifferent because I agree that there should be better boarder security for the interests of national security I don’t think that a wall is necessary the best option.

This got me thinking more about this whole idea about identifying with a specific party but not agreeing with everything. This idea many people might not think about and in my experience people jump to conclusions when I say I’m a republican because they think I agree with everything. This couldn’t be farther from the truth and people need to think about this more and I think it would bring the two political parties closer. We would talk more between the parties which in politics is always good. Making assumptions is how uncivil conversations are started and in order for our political system not to be divided we need to have more civil dialogues rather than disagreements and arguments.
